Gravity meets Plasma Workshop on August 19-22, 2019
Gravitational lensing is one of the powerful tools to study our Universe. In particular, strong lensing effect can be studied for individual systems, and can provide important knowledge to the nature of dark matter and galaxy formation. In addition, it also contains rich cosmological information. The time delay measurements from strong-lensed quasars have produced complement constraints on the Hubble constant (H0), independent of either the local measurements or the CMB determination of H0.
On the other hand, plasma, including the ionized interstellar medium, solar wind and near radio sources can also cause light deflection of the radio emission, analogous to gravitational lensing. Plasma lensing has both provided insight into the km scale structure of emission physics, and provides probes of the lenses themselves, potentially a mechanism for ESEs and FRBs phenomenology. Moreover, radio facilities with very high spatial resolutions can map precisely the interstellar medium on very small scales as well as that of the magnetic field. Many radio plasma lenses exhibit strong lensing phenomena, that have traditionally been discussed with different notation, opening the opportunity for cross interaction with gravitational lensing.
In light of these two areas of research, we are organizing a workshop on the topics of strong lensing from gravity and plasmas to gather together scientists in the fields, reviewing recent progresses, discussing forefront problems, and facilitating potential collaborations and coordination for future studies. The workshop will take place on 19-22 August 2019 at the South-Western Institute for Astronomy Research (SWIFAR), Yunnan University, Chenggong District, Kunming, Yunnan Province, P.R.China.
